Understanding The Different Between Food And Dish


Food
The simple term food refers to anything that people or animals eat. The example of food are vegetables, fruits, meat, nuts, herbs and spices, plants, lentils, oil, milk etc. It can be cooked or raw.

Dish
It is the food from a particular place or country. dish is prepared by using different kind of ingredients or it can be cooked or raw. The word Dish can be interchangeable with food because it is used different food commodities to prepare a dish. The example of dish are Indian food | dish, Chinese food |dish, Continental food | dish, pizza, meat dish, pasta dish, vegetables dish. However, food can't be interchangeable with dish because you can't call the dish to the raw meat, pepper corn, parsley, apple, cauliflower and so on.

Additional Example
  • Pepper corn is a food, it can't be called dish. 
  • Raw or boiled vegetables is a food, but when it is seasoned with salt and pepper, it becomes a dish for example sautĂ© vegetable. similarly, cottage cheese is a food when it is used to make mutter paneer, paneer tikka and so on, these are called paneer dish.
  • Egg is a food when it is used to make fried egg or curries, it is called dish of egg.
